From the President's Desk
Deputy Bobby Stroop November 28, 2011 (CLICK HERE to download newsletter) Hello D.A.R.E. Association of Ohio Members! I am Deputy Bobby Stroop from the Highland County Sheriff’s Office and the current D.A.R.E. Association of Ohio (DAO) President. I’ll take this opportunity to thank each of you for your support of DAO and continued membership. On behalf of the DAO Board of Directors, I extend a WARM WELCOME to the DOT #63 class that graduated in September! The planning of the 2012 D.A.R.E. Officer and School Resource Officer Combined Conference is complete and registration forms and details are available at both the DAO website, www.dare-oh.org, and the OSROA website, www.osroa.org. The new keepin’ it REAL Elementary Curriculum training is part of the Conference and offered on Tuesday, June 26, from 1:15 – 4:15. For those DARE officers whose budgets do not allow them to attend the entire conference, registration for the keepin’ it REAL Elementary Curriculum training portion ONLY is available. Details and registration form are available at www.dare-oh.org. I would encourage everyone to attend the entire conference if possible; it will be a good one! A special thank you to Attorney General Dewine for his continued support of Law Enforcement and drug abuse prevention education in our schools. D.A.R.E. Grant support continues to be awarded to departments who have applied. Workbooks continue to be supplied to grant recipients. The newest announcement was that the AG’s office will support our efforts in OTC/RX prevention by supplying the workbooks for the supplemental 2- day lesson. A very special Thank You to Erin Sainato who continues to work hard talking with individual departments regarding funding needs. She truly has our mission in mind as money needs continue to be a hot topic of our state. For all officers who are teaching the keepin’ it Real Curriculum: Remember this curriculum is listed on the National Registry of Evidenced Based Prevention Programs – NREPP. This is important, why? As you look for grants from the ODE (Ohio Department of Education) or NIJ, DOJ – the NREPP listing is a great selling point when you write your program narrative relating to grant requests. Any D.A.R.E. officer requesting grant funding should be sure to include the NREPP listing as this really is a plus for our program! A listing in the NREPP certifies that the keepin’ it REAL curriculum is PROVEN to produce results as it has been time studied with positive results. There are grant monies and community partnerships available for those departments having difficulties finding funding to purchase extra items for their programs. Any officers providing special programs in their districts or who have other positive D.A.R.E. related informational items should be sure to pass along to their district reps! D.A.R.E. Association of Ohio wants to pass along information of this kind to other D.A.R.E. officers. Positive news is both refreshing to our membership and gives new ideas to D.A.R.E. officers for their own programs. During this season of thanks and celebration, please keep in your thoughts the family and friends of D.A.R.E. Officer Judy Cochran, Clinton County SO, who passed away two weeks ago. Judy became a D.A.R.E. officer is October 1991 (in DOT #13) and continued teaching the D.A.R.E. program until 2004. Remember, Holidays are times for spending time with our families. I hope everyone in our association had a Happy Thanksgiving and wish all of you a Happy and Safe Holiday Season! Here is hoping that 2012 brings good will to everyone in our DAO family. |
