D.A.O. Introduction:
The D.A.O. was founded in March of 1989 for the purpose of providing a means to disseminate, share, advise, and
coordinate information on a statewide basis. The objectives are to provide teaching techniques; reinforce and
maintain discipline of the curriculum; and to promote harmony and goodwill among the membership. Becoming a member of the D.A.O. will give you a connection to state, regional, and national D.A.R.E. events, updates, trends and resources.
Membership Benefits:
• DAO Website: Features News Updates, Research/Evaluation Results, Awards Presented, Upcoming Training
Information and Links to OACP & LEF.
• Newsletter: Provides information on Seminars, New Drug Trends, National and Statewide Seminars and
Conference, and Training information. It is sent out quarterly via e-mail and available on-line. (Password

• Annual Retrainer: Offers Instructional Seminars, Training Updates, Networking Opportunities, Award
Presentations and Service Project.
• Yearly Awards: Larry R. Cox “Officer of the Year”, DAO Educator of the Year, Honorary DARE Officer, and DAO
Associate Member.
• Scholarships: These are awarded to children of DAO Members. Up to five Awards are given each year for up to
$500 per child. Money can be used for Books and Expenses at the College of their choice.
• Family Assistance Fund: Designed to help DAO Member families in time of need. Applications are approved by
the DAO Executive Board for up to $500 to help with extensive medical needs, loss of home, furniture, clothing,
etc. from fire or any other situation that puts undo strain on the DARE Officer or his family.
• Annual Directory: Updated Contact Information for Active DARE Officers. It is distributed at the Annual
Retrainer each year.
• Elected Offices: Vice President (4 year term) two as vice and procession to President for two years. Secretary,
Treasurer, and Sgt-At-Arms. Elections are held at the Business Meeting during the Annual Retrainer.
• Youth Advisory Board Member: A student represents Ohio on the National Board and appears around the state
promotion the DARE philosophy. DARE America provides a $20,000 scholarship to one member of the Board
each year.
• DARE Instructor Advisory Committee (DIAC): Representation by the President of DAO serves on this Board. It
provides DARE America with input from Active DARE Officers. Meetings are held twice a year and conference
calls engage members in discussions with DARE America about the DARE Program.
All certified DARE Officers are given a complementary one year Membership into the DAO upon completion of DARE
Officer Training.
